Do you ever feel like even though you’re doing all the right things, something still feels like it’s missing? That’s how I’ve felt for the last few years. I’ve done so much to build my career, have a social life, and meet the expectations I feel I have to meet. Since I’ve started Financial Flamingo I’ve started to dream about what else could be possible – now running my business keeps me sane!
I have always been entrepreneurial-minded. Playing “store” was always my favorite game as a child, and I think I’ve started 3 or 4 blogs in the years since I graduated from college. At one point I considered starting a pet store… and even my MBA has a focus in entrepreneurial leadership!
Financial Flamingo gives me an outlet to talk about the things I love talking about while getting to enjoy an entrepreneurial project. Why am I telling you all this? Because if you’ve ever thought about starting your own blog or online business, I want you to go for it!
How I Got Started
Financial Flamingo started as a place for me to share my progress paying off my debt. I pretty much just started the blog and immediately launched it without too much planning. Once I started researching blogging a little more, I realized that it could actually be a business opportunity and I decided to lean into that.
About 6 months after I started my blog, I also started a YouTube channel. Not only was it a great way to add interest to blog posts, but it was another income opportunity as well. I was able to grow my channel and qualify for monetization within 3 months.
In March of 2020, I enrolled in Elite Blog Academy to take my business to the next level. At this point, I made a slight shift in my content to better reflect the message I really care about – empowering women to win with money and in life, on her own terms!
What I Love About Blogging
If you’ve ever considered starting a blog before, I highly suggest you jump right in! While blogging is a ton of work – I won’t lie to you there – it is so worthwhile to find a community of other like-minded people to share with. Making some extra money on the side doesn’t hurt either!
I think my absolute favorite thing about blogging is that it can be whatever I want it to be. I work a very systematic and intense corporate job (which I do love!). Writing for Financial Flamingo gives me a creative outlet that helps me turn off the regulating side of my brain and just do what I want!
I also like that it helps hold me accountable for the goals I set for myself. Finding financial freedom and paying off debt is definitely a long term goal. Especially with posts like income reports and debt updates, it is nice to be able to go back and see my progress over time.
How My Business Keeps Me Sane
Most of all, my business gives me a way to hold onto my dreams. What are those big dreams you hold inside and don’t really talk about? One of mine has always been to own my own business! Building your own business is amazing because you get out exactly what you put in, and you can build something you’re really proud of.
When my job gets stressful or I’m just not feeling content, my blog gives me an outlet to talk about what’s going on. I get to come here and talk about the things I love to talk about, which is usually pretty therapeutic and makes me feel a lot better.
While Financial Flamingo is very much still a work in progress, I am really happy with myself for taking the first step and just getting started. That can be the hardest step for a lot of people, so if that sounds like you I really want to encourage you to take the leap!
