How to Establish a Morning Routine
Having a set routine that I do every single morning is actually something I’ve done since I was in middle school. Think about it – you can roll out of bed and be on autopilot for the first hour until you finally start to wake up. Establishing a morning routine that includes a lot of healthy habits is a great way to start making changes in your life.
If you don’t have an existing morning routine, try adding things in one step at a time. For example, I would start by getting up at the same time every day. Once you have that down, you can start making time to write out your to do list. Before you know it you’ll have an entire effective morning routine that you don’t even have to think about.
What if you already have an established morning routine? I’m working on changing my own, and I’ve been also just trying to change one thing at a time. I made a list of things I want to add into my morning routine and started making changes by figuring out what time I needed to start getting up to include all of those things. I’m not adding all those things in at one time, but starting to get up earlier is my first step.
Let’s go over some good habits to include in your morning routine!
1. Get up at the same time.
Make it a point to get up at the same time every single day – even on the weekends. Going to bed and getting up at the same time every day is healthier for you and will keep you from feeling so tired all the time.
Most people are the freshest and get the most done first thing in the morning. I love waking up early and getting a bunch done in the first two hours I’m awake. Getting my main tasks done by 10am and having the rest of the day for whatever I want is probably one of my favorite feelings.
Whether you’re an early bird or night owl, figure out what time works best for you to get up every day and start sticking to that! And make sure to adjust your bedtime accordingly.
2. Give yourself time to wake up.
You really need to give your brain some time to fully wake up before you jump into anything. Have a cup of coffee or do your workout before you start working on anything too intense.
If you have to roll out of bed and immediately fly through getting ready to get to the office on time, your brain isn’t really going to have any time to adjust to being awake. Giving yourself a few minutes to ease into your morning can go a long way toward setting the tone for your day.
3. Exercise.
Moving your body first thing in the morning is so good for you. Not only will it help wake you up and get your mind working, but you’ll have more energy throughout the day. Plus, exercising is just healthy.
Find some type of workout that will fit well with your lifestyle. If you know you aren’t going to be able to force yourself to drive to the gym at 5am, then don’t sign up for a gym membership. Maybe an at-home workout system is more your style. Try out a couple of different options until you find a workout you like and that you can stick to.
4. Make time for your goals.
Do you have dreams you always say you’ll start working on one day? So, when is someday going to come?
Start getting up an hour or two earlier and give yourself some time to work on the things you are passionate about. I have started getting up a little bit earlier so I can take care of some daily business tasks before I have to fully jump into my day job.
Waiting until the evening after you’ve already had a long day at work is not going to give you good results. How many times have you said you were going to come home and read, or work on your blog, or start writing your book – and watched netflix for three hours instead?
We are so burned out and tired by the end of the work day that coming home and starting on another project is way too easy to push off. Taking some time to work on your goals in the morning is going to give you a lot more motivation and inspiration to keep pushing forward.
5. Plan out your day.
The first thing I do every morning is sit down and create a plan for the day. Whether you just write out a to do list or set up your planner, this is a great way to set a productive tone. When I know exactly what I need to get done, it’s easier to start on those things first.
If I don’t create a plan for my day I can very easily find myself at 3pm wondering what the heck I did all day. This is pretty frustrating, especially on the weekends! Make a list of all the things you need to get done for the day in the order you want to get them done. Then you can just power through the list without stopping to prioritize or get organized.
6. Learn something new.
Take some time to read a book or work on a course in the morning. I love to read but I don’t make enough time for it anymore. I want to get back to taking half an hour in the morning to just read and do something I enjoy.
A lot of us stop learning once we leave school. Reading a book or working on a course is a great way to keep your mind sharp. You could pick up a book on one of your hobbies, start learning something that will help with your career, or just find a fun biography.
7. Have gratitude.
Spend a few minutes thinking about everything you are thankful to have. It can be so easy to get caught up in the rush of our daily lives and working toward the next thing and never stop to think about how amazing it is to be where we already are. Take a minute to think about three or four things you’re grateful for each morning.
A strong morning routine can help you start every day ready to tackle anything. Starting your day on the right foot can change your whole outlook. Use these tips and get to work creating your own perfect morning routine!
